So i uninstalled the whole game and I have just installed it again and I am back to the launcher working but the game hanging on a black screen. It seems there is some more rockstar launcher crap hiding somewhere.
Stating the game again just gave me "a newer version of the launcher is already installed, aborting setup".
So I ran the uninstaller for the launcher and it seemed to remove it. (probably a dumb idea) It ran the setup and seemed to install ok, but I was still getting "a newer version of the launcher is already installed, aborting setup" when starting the game. So getting desperate I hunted for the rockstar launcher.exe and found the installer and ran it. So again I tried running with an older version of proton and again the launcher said "a newer version of the launcher is already installed, aborting setup" This fixed the launcher, but again the game just hangs on a black screen. So I uninstalled the game and installed it again. Now when I launch the game it says "a newer version of the rockstar launcher is already installed aborting setup" then it quits.
I tried switching to an older version of proton in an attempt at fixing it. I verified integrity of the game files but everything was validated properly. I had got about 30% of the way through the game, then yesterday steam did updates for various things and now the game just hangs on a black screen after the rockstar launcher has done it's thing. I installed it about a week ago, and it was working fine.
